New to Yoga? Why a Beginners Course is the Best Place to Start

Updated: 5 days ago

Good technique from the start

Yoga is about more than just stretching. The physical postures require alignment and technique to prevent injury and get the most benefit. A beginners course focuses on the basics - teaching you how to sit, stand and breathe, before taking these fundamental principles into traditional yoga postures. When you start with a solid foundation, you’ll avoid bad habits that can be hard to shake later.

Build Confidence at Your Own Pace

Yoga can feel overwhelming if you dive into a class where everyone else seems more advanced. Beginners courses are designed for people just like you - those who may never have tried yoga before or are getting back into it after a break. These courses move at a slower pace, giving you time to develop your understanding and ask questions. As you gradually become more familiar, your confidence will grow, and you’ll feel more comfortable in other classes down the line.

Avoid Overexertion

Yoga is all about balance, and starting slow ensures you're not pushing yourself too hard too fast. Beginners classes typically provide modifications and alternative options for each posture, helping you avoid overextending yourself and risking injury. A beginners course allows you to build up gradually, ensuring your body can handle more challenging classes later on.

Establish Consistency and Routine

The benefits of yoga come through consistent practice. Committing to attending a course rather than just trying a one-off class helps you create a consistent routine and allows you to see progression week on week as you build on the foundations laid in the previous classes.

Begin your journey now

If you’re ready to start your yoga journey, take the first step with a beginners course. You'll build a strong foundation, gain confidence, and set yourself up for long-term success, without rushing the process.

If you're in the West Norfolk area and are interested in attending a Yoga for Beginners course, I offer 6 week courses, taught to small groups of no more than 10 people. We cover foundational postures and breathing techniques, and mats and props are provided.  I teach at Yoga at The Grange, a beautiful purpose built yoga studio in the grounds of The Grange Hotel, King's Lynn.

As a follow-on from a beginners course, I offer weekly Yoga Basics classes. These approachable, relaxed classes include a mix of breath work, mobility, strength and relaxation. Use of props is actively encouraged.

Ellie is a yoga teacher who shares restorative practices to help busy people take time out, switch off and do less. She also runs a small yoga studio in King's Lynn, Norfolk, UK.
