Restorative Yoga Classes

What can I expect in a No Pressure Yoga Restorative Class?

The studio will be set up and all props laid out in advance. If you have your own mat, you can place it over the one that has been set out - having the extra thickness will likely make your experience more comfortable.

I will go through the sequence at the start of the session so that once we get into the restorative part of the class, you don't need to sit up to watch a demonstration.

We may begin with some gentle movement, pranayama, or both. Once this is done, I will assist each person individually with their props to find the most comfortable version of each restorative posture for them. Class sizes are intentionally small to allow for 1:1 assistance. We will typically move through 3-5 postures in a 60 minute class.

Towards the end of the session, you will be invited to take a little gentle movement, before finishing in a seated position.

Who are Restorative Yoga Classes for?

These classes are for anyone looking for rest, particularly for those who find it difficult to switch off at home. I offer a calm and quiet space with no distractions, where the only aim is to make oneself as comfortable as possible and to relax. Set aside some time and take the rest that you deserve.

Please note that restorative yoga practices are not suitable for individuals who have experienced recent trauma or are in mental health crisis. If you are unsure whether restorative yoga is suitable for you, please contact me before booking.

Are Restorative Yoga classes suitable for beginners?

Our Restorative Yoga classes are suitable beginners. They do not require previous experience of any form of yoga. Any movement will be gentle, brief, and entirely optional. The classes are almost entirely floor-based and do not involve strength work or any cardiovascular exertion. The only physical requirement is the ability to get down to and up from the floor unaided.

Mats and all props are provided, though you are welcome to bring your own if you prefer. Please wear comfortable clothes that you can move freely in.

Is Restorative Yoga similar to Yin yoga?

While both Restorative Yoga and Yin Yoga classes tend to be floor-based, include postures held for longer than in regular movement-based classes, and make use of props such as bolsters, they are not alike.

Yin Yoga has roots in Traditional Chinese Medicine and works with meridians (energy channels) within the body. Sequences are often devised based on elements of TCM such as five element theory, working with particular meridians, yin and yang organ pairing, etc. There is a focus on applying gentle stress to connective tissues (fascia) through postures held for ususally 3-5 minutes, which can create intense sensations of stretch.

In contrast, Restorative Yoga seeks to calm the nervous system, in particular, to induce a shift from a state dominated by the sympathetic 'fight or flight' nervous system, into a parasympathetic 'rest and digest' state. We seek to avoid stretch and stress by using props to support the body so that postures can be held for prolonged periods (generally 5-20 minutes) with no sense of work or effort. The most important factor is comfort, which enables rest.

What if I fall asleep in class?

This is nothing to worry about - it happens regularly. In our classes, if someone falls asleep I will let them sleep - they clearly need it. I consider it a great compliment as a teacher of Restorative Yoga that they feel relaxed and comfortable enough in the space to fully rest.

I will gently wake people around 5 minutes before the end of the session so that they have time to awaken fully before leaving.
